Steps

1
Done

Sift the flour, corn starch, salt, and baking powder together into a large mixing bowl. After stirring together all of the ingredients, put them aside.

2
Done

Beat the butter and sugar until it is light and fluffy, then add the eggs one at a time.

Stir in the flour in multiple batches. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least two hours.

3
Done

Roll out the cold dough in small batches, and roll out.

Using a cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes.

4
Done

Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes at 375°F, then rotate the tray and bake for another 3-6 minutes, depending on the size, thickness, and crispiness desired.

Allow for cooling on a rack.

5
Done

In a bowl, sift the powdered sugar. Beat the egg whites and add the cream of tartar once they become frothy.

In 3-4 batches, add the sugar and mix on low speed.

Once combined, add the water until desired consistency is reached.

6
Done

Decide on the number of icing colors you want and divide the leftover icing into that number of bowls. Put a few drops of gel food coloring in each bowl of icing and swirl by hand until the color is evenly distributed.

Decorate cookies with colored icing.
