Line 2 muffin tins with cupcake liners. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F. |

Cream the butter and sugar together in a large mixing basin with a hand mixer. Beat in eggs and buttermilk until mixture is smooth. |

Add in baking powder and salt and mix in briefly, until just combined. Slowly beat in cake flour just until the mixture is smooth. |

Divide prepared white cake mix into 3 bowls. Add red food coloring to one, and blue food coloring to another, leave one bowl with white batter. |

Spoon a little of each color batter into your cupcake liners, filling about 1/2 full. Bake 20 minutes and let cool. |

Place butter in a large mixing bowl and beat slightly. Add cream cheese and blend until combined, about 30 seconds. Blend on low until the vanilla and sugar are incorporated. Increase the speed to medium and continue to beat until the mixture becomes fluffy. Slowly add the cream a little at a time until desired consistency. |
