500 g Potatoes starchy
200 ml Cream
1 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
125 g Gruyere Cheese grated
1 Garlic Clove
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper
1 teaspoon Thyme leaves

Preheat the oven to 375 F.
Slice the potatoes into thin rounds. Smear softened butter all over the bottom of a baking dish.

Add the cream, garlic clove and seasoning to a large saucepan and heat on a burner at medium until simmering,

Layer a third of potatoes, slightly overlapping, in prepared dish then pour a third of cream mixture over potatoes. Repeat with remaining potatoes and cream to make two more layers. Sprinkle Gruyere over top.

Cover with lid or foil, and bake for 1 hr 15 min or until the potatoes in the middle are soft. Remove foil, top with cheese. Bake for a further 10 to 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
